One of the best things about a Holga / Diana is that the shutter release is independent from the winding mechanism. This makes multiple exposures very easy to do. To take a double exposure, take your first picture, then instead of winding on after your first, immediately take another picture.

Tips for multiple exposures:

Multiple exposures work best with simple, contrasting subjects. Try to avoid bright or white light as the risk of over-exposure is greater. For example, take a picture of a texture (e.g. grass, rocks, sand, etc.) for your first shot, and then a subject for your second.

You aren’t limited to double or triple exposures; just keep clicking! This works best in lower light so you don’t overexpose your negative.

Try multi-exposures at night with a flash, you might get some ghostly results!

Try different coloured gels over your lens when taking multi-exposures for crazy colours.

Take a picture of architecture, and then rotate the camera 180º and take another shot. This technique also works well with horizons.

And remember to twist the lens until you hear that magical ‘click’ sound – when you hear the click, you can start you shoot!

Here’s what you can do. If your redscale film is at ISO 400 or even ISO 200, you can set down your camera to ASA 100, this in turn would reduce the dominant reddish effect of the film. But to get a more yellow, gold results, or to just get a surprising color result, you can change the setting of your camera’s aperture.

Usually on a sunny day, apertures are set to 8 on a film with ISO 100. If the aperture is set to 8, you will get just enough light for your redscale film notched at ASA 100, but when you step down one more notch to 5.6 on your aperture setting, this will pretty much take away the the redish, wine-tainted colors of the redsclae film. Different color effects results from such aperture adjustments such as yellow, gold, brown and sometimes grayish color. I think it’s just about the right aperture setting so as not to wash-out or overexposed your results.

If your camera is no ASA setting, It is very simple, all you need to do is set your camera to bulb mode, As for how long, it depends on the condition. If it is sunny, bulb for half a second, if it is cloudy, make it a second.

Also, you can play around with the aperture settings, just note down what aperture was used on such shots taken. This play on your camera’s settings definitely make redscaling more fun. Now, go out and try it

Some things just look better in black & white. You can everyday objects and scenes around you interesting. What might appear boring when shot in color suddenly becomes fascinating when captured in black and white.

It’s classic and elegant, even romantic and special
When people look at a black & white photograph, they often remark how “classic” and “elegant” it looks. Black & white prints have a refined quality about them. The simplicity and uncluttered look give the subject a polished, high-class feel. Without the distractions of color, the picture begs each viewer to recognize the individuality and uniqueness of the subject. Brides often ask for black and white is that it most clearly expresses the romantic. They know that there is something special about it. It has style.

The simplicity of black & white helps you focus on the important stuff
Black and white focuses the attention on form, shading, pattern, and other graphic concepts, to give them an unusual quality with tone and hue. Many artists prefer black and white because it causes the photographer and the viewer to see the world in a way that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Seeing the reoccurring pattern, line, or shape is easier with black & white, which does such a good job of emphasizing it. This is especially the case when a black and white photo shows good contrast – when the blacks are black, the highlights are bright, when you can still see some detail in both the highlights and the shadows.

When black & white works better than color
Black and white works very nicely for portrait photography. Skin tones, in black and white, are mellowed; blotches, blemishes, and uneven shading is less easily noticed than it is in color photos. Our eyes are very critical of facial skin tones in color but, when we examine black and white, we cannot evaluate the tones with the same critical eye.

Black & white is a predominant choice among masters because it tells the graphic story clearly; it is conducive to learning the art; it connotes a classic fineness; and it is plain and simple fun.
